Surviving the UK Heatwave - Handy tips to keep you cool!

When summer temperatures soar, a caravan can quickly turn into a mobile greenhouse. Because they are essentially insulated boxes with large windows, trapping heat is what they do best.

However, with a few smart tactical adjustments, you can keep your living space remarkably comfortable without relying entirely on a noisy air conditioning unit. Here is how to beat the heat on your next caravan getaway.

1. Intercept the Sun (Before it Hits the Glass)

The single most effective thing you can do is stop solar radiation from entering the caravan. Once sunlight passes through your windows, the heat is trapped inside.

  • Deploy your awning or sun canopy: Setting up a canopy creates a massive barrier of shade over the side of your caravan, cooling down the external wall and preventing the sun from baking your main windows.

  • Reflective covers: Use thermal silver screens on the outside of your windows if possible. If you must use internal blinds, choose the reflective silver side facing outwards to bounce the heat away.

  • The damp towel trick: Hanging a damp, light-colored towel over the outside of hot windows can radically drop the temperature of the glass through evaporative cooling.

2. Master the Art of Ventilation

Opening every window wide during the hottest part of the day is actually a mistake—it just invites the boiling outside air in.

  • The Daytime Lockdown: When the outside temperature is higher than the inside temperature, close the windows and pull down the blinds on the sunny side.

  • The Evening Flush: As soon as the outside air cools down in the evening, open windows on opposite sides of the caravan to create a cross-breeze.

  • Roof Lights: Heat rises. Keep your roof vents cracked open slightly throughout the day to give rising hot air an escape hatch.

3. Manage Your Internal Heat Sources

Sometimes we are our own worst enemies when it comes to heating up a small space.

  • Cook Outdoors: Running a gas hob or oven inside a caravan during a heatwave is a recipe for misery. Take the cooking outside to a BBQ or a portable gas stove under your awning.

  • Switch to LEDs: Traditional halogen bulbs generate a surprising amount of ambient heat. If your caravan hasn't been upgraded to LEDs yet, keep the lights off during the day.

  • Unplug charging tech: Laptops, power banks, and tablets generate heat while charging. Charge them overnight or outside in the awning if safely possible.

The Ice Cube Fan Trick: If you have a 12V or mains-powered fan, place a frozen bottle of water or a bowl of ice directly in front of it. It won't cool the whole caravan, but it will create a wonderfully chilled personal breeze while you relax.
